Phil Edwards is regarded as the first professional surfer. He was born in 1938 and grew up in Long Beach. When he was a kid, he loved to ride paddleboards and lifeguard rescue boards. This sparked his interest in surfing. By 1960 he was considered one of the best surfers out there. He was even on the cover of the July 18, 1966 edition of Sports Illustrated. He not only surfed but he shaped boards as well. In 1963 he introduced the first signature surfboard. Phil Edwards was the first surfer to conquer the Banzai Pipeline. He also appeared in two surfing films by Bruce Brown. One of these films featured footage of him surfing the Pipeline.
