This Surf spot is located in Northern California. It is a half a mile off the coast of Pillar Point Harbor. Mavericks is one of the premier destinations for big wave surfing. An unusually shaped underwater rock formation is the cause of the large waves. The waves are at their highest during the winter season. After a winter storm the waves can crest at around 25 feet and can top out at about 80 feet. Riding these waves at Mavericks can be very hazardous. An invitational surf competition is held every winter and is for select few big wave surfers from around the world.

The location got its name from four friends who wanted to try to find a good surf spot off Pillar Point Harbor. They brought their German Shepherd named Maverick along with them. They later nicknamed the site after their dog. Mavericks gained major interest after a photo in Surfer Magazine.
